As we move into the 21st century, technology and regulatory approaches are lagging in meeting the challenges of changing ecosystems and economies in the Great Lakes. At an April 1 webinar, Alliance guest speaker Rudi Strickler, distinguished professor of biological sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, offered a historic and physical analysis of ballast and potential no-ballast ships, and showed images from inside the ballast tank of the U.S. EPA Lake Guardian. On the regulatory side, William Creal, Water Resources Division chief of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, discussed efforts to update Michigan’s Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plan, as well as other work that has made Michigan a leader in controlling ballast water pollution among Great Lakes states.
The webinar is the first in a series of eight ballast water webinars the Alliance plans to host in the next two years.
Tune in to the recorded webinar and learn what’s being done to curb the flow of these alien invaders.
