The Alliance partnered with the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission and Village of Winthrop Harbor to provide a workshop for riparian landowners on Sept. 18.
The workshop featured an indoor educational program, followed by an outdoor, hands-on opportunity to put the lessons learned into practice. V3, a local environmental consulting firm, provided the educational programming and led the field event.
The event was attended by more than 60 people, the majority of whom were local streamside homeowners. Participants learned how to manage native and invasive vegetation, curb erosion, improve stream habitat, minimize debris accumulation, reduce runoff from their property, and prevent pollution; they also received facts about funding projects, stream dynamics, landowner rights and responsibilities, and activities that do or do not require a permit.
Everyone left with handouts and samples of native prairie seed mixes to create riparian buffers at home. The handouts provided to participants are accessible by clicking the links below:
